WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: JACKIE REDMOND PLUS MUCH MORE!
We had breaking news and more big name guests on Episode #457 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – on Wednesday! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont got it going with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Tuesday NHL leftovers (the landing spots for Taylor Hall potentially include Toronto, NY Islanders, Boston and Calgary), 2) A new downtown ballpark is proposed for Regina, 3) Connor Bedard nets 4 points in the Pats’ 6-1 win over Swift Current on the very day his grandfather was tragically killed in an auto accident in BC. We expressed our condolences to the Bedard family, 4) RP broke the news that CFL leaders are discussing a reduction in Canadian players per team and a reduction of Canadian starters to three, 5) The Blue Jays fell 7-4 in Texas and face the Rangers in a matinee on Wednesday, and 6) Perhaps it’s time we included more soccer talk.
- On the CFL scoop, Rod said the tip from a source was very clear that this is a discussion point among league leaders and the panel examined the news with viewers. Not everyone is opposed to the notion.
- NHL Network’s Jackie Redmond joined the show from New Jersey. A self-proclaimed potato chip fanatic, she divulged that she prefers sour cream Kettle chips. Rod opts for Pringles Buffalo Wing chips and Ruffles All Dressed. Jackie admitted that American NHL fans are starved for coverage and her daytime show NHL Now – which airs daily at 4:00 pm ET – is the ONLY live NHL talk in the USA. She said the Leafs are likely in on Taylor Hall but feels Nick Foligno would be a better fit for the Islanders. She doesn’t see why the Flames would be in on Hall and said it’s time for Calgary to blow it up. She previewed Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline possibilities and dabbled in MLB talk since she also hosts on MLB Network. Growing up in Toronto, Jackie revealed that she was a Blue Jays fan ahead of any other sports team.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Would you trade for Taylor Hall if you were an NHL contender? At press time over 60% of respondents said no.
- In Hour 2’s Second Half Kickoff we were joined by Brandon Wheat Kings broadcaster Branden Crowe in the bunker. He’s in Regina for the Hub and said if junior hockey suffers from pandemic blahs with fans, the current young stars in the WHL will bring the game roaring back. The Virden, MB product was a popular guest and fielded tons of questions from viewers throughout Western Canada.
- TSN NHL Insider Darren Dreger joined the show from his Toronto home and as the former Voice of the Wheat Kings, he and Crowesie talked about all things Brandon. Dreger admitted he’s following the Wheat Kings very closely and although junior hockey isn’t getting talked about much by TSN announcers, Connor Bedard is. Darren discussed his reporting on the Vancouver Canucks Covid situation and despite backlash over “sensationalizing” the story, he said he’s confident in his sources and isn’t concerned about Twitter haters. On the Taylor Hall story, Darren guaranteed he’ll be traded but said it’ll be to a team approved by Hall. Regarding being an insider leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline, Dregs admitted he’ll spend the next 11 months apologizing to all NHL teams because “we’re basically carpet-bombing them” for TSN’s coverage.
- The rest of the show was spent on Viewer Takeover and it was a spicy debate with viewers regarding the new Regina ballpark, the reduction in the CFL ratio and much more. For critics who say this is taking the CANADIAN out of the CFL, Rod said the league is named for where it resides (similar to the American Hockey League) rather than the makeup of its players. He also said he’s received encouraging news from Alberta sports sources regarding the potential for full capacity in stadiums by Labour Day.
