WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: KNEE-DEEP IN STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS!

Away we go! There was lots to discuss after Day 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and we had it all on Episode #295 of The RP Show. Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes covered these Quick Six show topics in The Rollout for Flooring Superstores: 1) Tampa Bay beats Columbus 3-2 in the 5th OT, the fourth-longest game in NHL playoff history, 2) Fallout from the game including the “non-call” in overtime, and Joonis Korpisalo setting a record with 85 saves in a losing cause, 3) In other Game 1’s, Calgary beat Dallas 3-2 and Vegas upended Chicago 4-1, 4) Should the NHL have moved the Boston/Carolina game to Wednesday morning?, 5) The Blue Jays christened their Buffalo home with a 5-4 win over the Marlins in 10 innings, and 6) Damian Lillard drops 61 points for the Trailblazers in a 134-131 win over the Mavericks (two months ago he didn’t even want to play).
  • TSN NHL Insider Darren Dreger joined the show to cover all these topics. He reported that the NHL didn’t have a plan in place for a multi-overtime game in the Bubble format but elected to move the game to Wednesday after both teams agreed to it. Dreger touched on the Blue Jackets/Lightning Game 1, and also revealed that the majority of NHL teams are against keeping the 24-team format. Dregs also discussed the career of country star Jess Moskaluke as the pair hail from Langenburg, SK, and explained what retiring Insider Bob McKenzie meant to Darren’s career. (McKenzie lured Dreger over to TSN from Sportsnet because he was tired of competing with him for NHL scoops).
  • Hour 1 closed with CFL discussion on whether players should be expected to put their lives at risk during the pandemic (Duron Carter Tweeted that they shouldn’t), and the regular Viewer Takeover segment.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should the NHL have moved the Bruins/Hurricances came to Wednesday? At press time the results were around 50/50.
  • The poll for Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 10 of the CFL SIM season resulted in the Calgary/BC game being computer-simulated and broadcast on Facebook Live Thursday at 7 pm MT on The RP Show Facebook Live channel.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by 3DownNation CFL Insider Justin Dunk for a lengthy CFL update. He said both the CFL and CFLPA are optimistic about playing a shortened season and are working together on a Return To Play concept in private negotiations. Dunk also defended Commissioner Randy Ambrosie for staying in the shadows while the league works feverishly to get a 2020 season in.
  • Veteran CFL punter Jamie Boreham (Lions, Bombers, Tiger-Cats, Argonauts, Roughriders over 12 seasons) joined the show from Kelowna, BC. He was pleased to catch up with RP since the pair hasn’t visited since 2012. Jamie discussed debuting with his hometown BC Lions in 2001 and reflected on his career as a fierce special teams tackler. Regarding the 2007 Grey Cup, Jamie couldn’t believe how long ago it was because it seems since yesterday. He also talked about coaching the Okanagan Suns junior team and how much he loves coaching and giving back to the game.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Darren Dreger was leading. Tuesday’s vote was won by WHL Commissioner Ron Robison.
  • Be sure to join us at 10 am MT on Thursday on Game+ TV, Facebook Live and RodPedersen.com/ListenLive as we’ll be joined by Columbus Blue Jackets defensemen Ryan Murray of White City, SK and Columbus pro scout Rich Sutter!
