WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: LIONS SALE, QUEEN’S PLATE & ROD BLACK!
Wednesday’s Episode #552 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – was another rollicking good time! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont got things going with The Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Bo Levi Mitchell’s out with a broken leg. Will Calgary win a game without him? 2) MLSE teams will require proof of vaccination to all games, 3) Rod’s NHL Central Division standings prediction is – Colorado, Winnipeg, Chicago, Dallas, Minnesota, St. Louis, Nashville and Arizona, 4) NFL Notes – The Patriots won’t name a #1 QB. Why would they? 5) Are the Blue Jays done? and 6) It’s CEBL league awards night at Championship Weekend in Edmonton.
- News broke during the show that the BC Lions have been sold to BC entrepreneur Amar Doman. The hosts discussed his background and what this means for the Lions and the CFL!
- Woodbine Entertainment CEO Jim Lawson – the former Chairman of the CFL Board of Governors – joined the show from Toronto to preview Sunday’s 162nd running of the Queen’s Plate. Jim said the horse race is two months later than normal, but they’re excited to welcome 7,500 fans to Woodbine. He said the field is wide open, and will be run at 4:30 pm ET on CTV & TSN on Sunday. Jim explained how horse racing has survived the pandemic and what the past year has been like working with the Ontario government. Lawson also said he retired from the CFL at a good time given all the challenges the league is currently facing.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who’s the best team in the NHL’s Central Division – Colorado, Winnipeg, Chicago or Dallas? At press time the Avalanche were leading.
- In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for CORR Grain we were joined by TSN’s Rod Black from the World Womens Hockey Championship in Calgary. Rod previewed the tournament, predicted a Canada-USA final, and examined the storylines. He also said it’s been difficult living in a bubble in Calgary, and said the mandatory quarantine forced him to miss calling Week 2 CFL games. However Blackie said he’s loved the CFL action and can’t wait to get back into the booth!
- The final three segments were devoted to Viewer Takeover and Rod and Darren Dupont debated with viewers over which sports teams they’d like to own. Dupes said he’s not sure which team it would be, but said it would be football. Rod said he’s not interested in sports team ownership and even turned down being part of a hockey team ownership group a few weeks back. Most viewers picked their own favourite sports teams as the one they’d like to own. For some reason the topic of Connor Bedard came up and the hosts and viewers debated which would be a great NHL fit for the Regina Pats phenom.
