WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: LOTS OF HOCKEY TALK AND RON DUGUAY STORIES!
If we may say so ourselves, Wednesday’s Episode #434 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – might be our best ever! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont opened with The Warmup for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Blue Jays down the Phillies 4-2 in George Springer’s exhibition debut, 2) Tuesday NHL leftovers (and Rod’s Scotia North starting six All-Stars), 3) It’s Game #3 of the 3-game set tonight between the Leafs & Oilers in Edmonton, 4) Oilers Entertainment Group applies to welcome fans in April, 4) Kamloops & Kelowna are approved as Hub Centres for the WHL’s B.C. Division, and 6) The undermanned Raptors take on Detroit Wednesday night in Tampa.
- NHL legend Ron Duguay has started following RP on Twitter but none of the show staff know who he is? Rod launched into infamous stories about the 12-year NHLer who was “Bon Jovi before there was Bon Jovi”. He spun some funny tales about the legend who is Ron Duguay and proudly reported Ron will be on the show next week to talk New York Rangers.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is the NHL’s strongest division – Scotia North, Honda West, MassMutual East or Discover Central? At press time, Scotia North was leading.
- Washington Capitals TV analyst and WHL/Estevan Bruins alum Alan May joined the show to talk all things NHL. He feels the MassMutual East Division is the strongest of the four but admitted the NHL seems like four separate leagues this season. His MassMutual All-Star starting six are: Panarian-Backstrom-Pastrnak, Chara-Carlson & Varlamov.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and were joined my NHL alum and Dropping The Gloves podcast host John Scott from Traverse City, MI. He explained his controversial comment this week that the Maple Leafs aren’t being tested in the regular season and will run into trouble in the playoffs. The St. Catherines, ON product said he doesn’t like the Leafs, they don’t like him, and he could care less if the Leafs Nation is mad at him. He agreed with Rod however, that a run-and-gun team could still win it all however he favours the old adage “Defense wins championships.” Of all his NHL stops, John said his favourite cities to play in were San Jose and Chicago as a Sharks and Blackhawks player. His stint with the Coyotes lasted only 11 games and he said he wasn’t able to soak in the Scottsdale nightlife because he lived in a seniors complex. “While Max Domi and the guys were out on the town, I was in the hot tub with Merv!” Scott laughed.
- TSN 1260 Edmonton’s Dustin Nielson joined the show to preview Wednesday night’s Leafs/Oilers clash and said it’s the biggest test of the season for Edmonton. He admits the Oilers don’t have consistent enough goaltending to be a Stanley Cup contender but feels GM Ken Holland knows this. We had a wide-ranging NHL chat and took tons of questions from viewers
- What made the show so great was that L.A. Rams DB Derrick Moncrief dropped by the bunker in a break to drop off some swag and autographed pictures! RP advised the staff not to take these types of things for granted, and that we continue to be blessed by the buy-in from the sports community.

Great show!!! When the kids do not know who thee Ron Duguay is society failed them. This is why kids need to collect hockey cards and sticker books. His card always stood out. Then with a satellite dish and the Gretzky trade i never missed a Kings game that first year. The Rangers are my #2 team and behind them #3 are the Jets. Ron Duguay is an outstanding MSG analyst in the mold of a John Davidson. Believe me Ron Duguay could play hockey and like a true Gene Simmons/Bon Jovi rock God he handled the encores after the… Read more »
