WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: NHL DRAFT RECAP AND GRIDIRON TALK!

LACK

Hockey and football are top-of-mind these days and we faced off on both of them on Episode #334 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) NHL Draft Round 1 leftovers (it was a good day for Sask and the P.A. Raiders!), 2) Our expectations of Rounds 2-7 on Wednesday, 3) What’s been the craziest NHL transaction in the past 10 days? (RP said it’s the Rangers cutting loose Henrik Lundqvist and Dupes figures it’s Pittsburgh dealing goalie Matt Murray to Ottawa), 4) Aaron Rodgers’ controversial comment that a down year for him is a career year for other QBs, 5) The Lakers are a win away from their first NBA title in over 10 years, and 6) Canada’s Game of the Week in CFL SIM is Saskatchewan at Ottawa and we’ll broadcast it Thursday at 7 pm MT on the RP Show Facebook Live channel.
  • Former NHL goalie Eddie Lack joined the show from Phoenix and RP said unbeknownst to Eddie, he’s become an NHL Insider. The former Canuck, Hurricane, Devil and Flame is close friends with Henrik Lundqvist however the pair hasn’t spoken since he was bought out by the Rangers. Eddie feels King Henrik will sign with Colorado and said rather than a back-up role, Lundqvist would be better suited to a 1A and 1B goaltending scenario. Lack says the current goaltending situation in the NHL is “nuts” and that goalies have become expendable. He figures Vancouver would be crazy not to re-sign Jacob Markstrom since he’s the franchise’s best player. Lack sells luxury real estate in Phoenix now and said there are 200 people per day moving to The Valley of the Sun, so business is robust.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who had the best first round in the NHL Draft – Jets, Oilers, Flames or Other? At press time, the majority of voters selected “Other”. Dupes figures it’s the New York Rangers.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by Gord Randall, c0-host of TSN’s Krown Gridiron Nation program on Canadian football. Gord was a teammate of Dakoda Shepley’s at UBC and said it’s no surprise that he’s having success with the San Francisco 49ers and has overcome a lot of barriers to get to the NFL since he came from U-Sports. Randall discussed Football Canada’s summit with football stakeholders this month, predicted the future of the CFL isn’t as grim as it’s made out to be, and promoted the Mental Health resource www.tackleit.org to help players dealing with issues during the pandemic.
  • News broke during the show that Canada West Communications/Marketing Manager Evan Daum has joined the Regina Pats as Communications/Marketing Director, however will NOT handle play-by-play duties. The crew applauded the move as Evan is a friend of the show.
