WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: NHL FREE AGENCY & PLAYER TAKEOVER!
Wednesday’s Episode #537 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – was bonkers! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont opened with The Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The NHL Free Agency market opened at noon ET!, 2) The Blue Jays play a doubleheader at Boston, 3) In the CEBL, Hamilton downed Guelph 80-78 and Edmonton got past Fraser Valley 91-77, 4) Andrew Harris is now listed as questionable for the Blue Bombers’ Week 1 game, 5) The Quebec government allows 15,000 fans for the Alouettes home-opener while the 5,000 cap for the Riders Green & White Scrimmage was team-mandated, and 6) An Olympics update: All of Canada’s medals have come from the women!
- The show was lively with all the NHL signings but Rod said the only one he was following was Ryan Getzlaf, who re-signed with Anaheim. The host huffed about the fake news of Getzlaf potentially going to the Oilers or Canadiens. We kept a running tally of the signings throughout the show.
- Free agent WR Kenny Stafford joined the show from Columbus, Ohio to discuss being released by the Edmonton Elks last week and the team saying he wasn’t a “cultural fit”. The NFL, AFL & CFL vet had no ill words towards Elks coach Jaime Elizondo – in fact said Elizondo’s an excellent coach – however he wanted to point out this was his third stint with Edmonton and was never deemed a problem before (he won a Grey Cup there in 2015). Kenny’s coaching high school football at the moment but is hoping to sign with another pro team. Stafford said he stayed in Edmonton throughout the weekend hoping to get a call from another CFL team but it never materialized.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Do you like the Edmonton Oilers off-season moves? At press time the results were around 50/50.
- In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for the Four Seasons Sports Palace we read the statement from Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson regarding the team drafting controversial player Logan Mailloux in the first round, and debated the statement. We also discussed possible NFL destinations for the RP Show VIP sports trip this fall/winter.
- Next up was veteran CFL lineman Derek Dennis who joined the show from Arizona. He discussed his contract stalement with the Edmonton Elks, saying he hasn’t been happy with how the team has treated him since signing the deal. Dennis has asked for his release, but they won’t grant it. The former CFL Lineman Of The Year says he plans to play in 2022, but isn’t sure where. The Temple grad also discussed his decision to opt out for 2021 and how it triggered similar announcements by other CFL’ers including Brendon Labatte.
- RP and Moose Faced Off on the future of the Vegas Golden Knights and if they’re a better team than 24 hours ago before the Marc-Andre Fleury trade? Rod said yes, and that he believes in Golden Knights management. Moose agreed. The Face Off is a presentation of UFZ Moose Jaw and The Mad Greek Restaurant.
