WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: THE CFL’S ANNOUNCEMENT & MUCH MORE

We were the benefactors of great timing on Wednesday’s Episode #468 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont got it going with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The collapse of the European Soccer Super League movement, 2) Tuesday NHL leftovers (the Leafs are freefalling), 3) Dub Hub – the Pats beat the Blades 4-2, 4) Right at showtime, the CFL announced a targeted 2021 season kickoff date of August 5 (more on that below), 5) The Blue Jays fall 4-2 at the Red Sox, and 6) We left it open!
  • On the CFL’s announcement, the hosts applauded the CFL’s transparency and said frankly, this is all they could say given the Covid situation in Canada. RP said the CFL’s proclaimed there will be football this year, subject to a list of terms & conditions. In reality, we’re not much further ahead than 24 hours ago when we knew training camps would be delayed.
  • The Blue Jays got a tour of Fenway Park on Tuesday which prompted this daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question: Should the Red Sox build a new ballpark? At press time, over 70% of respondents said no.
  • Winnipeg Sports Talk’s Andrew “Hustler” Paterson joined the show to discuss the CFL’s announcement and he said it’s a hot topic in the Winnipeg capital despite the hot play of the Jets. Andrew agreed with Rod’s take that it would be nice if the CFL could find a way to play without fans but he said the CFL’s current business model just won’t allow it. Regarding a CFL/XFL merger, Hustler said Blue Bomber fans just want to watch football and would support any incarnation of the league. On the Jets, Paterson’s optimistic just like all Jets fans and believes they’re a Stanley Cup contender.
  • In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff we were deluged with viewer comments on the CFL’s announcement and whether or not the league will in fact play in 2021. A lot of the comments came from our American viewers.
  • Colorado Avalanche Insider Adrian Dater joined the show from Denver for a deep dive on the Avs and the Covid suspension of star Mikko Rantenan. He said Colorado has been through a ton of adversity this season but their goal is to finish first and expect to win the Stanley Cup. The New Hampshire product told some behind-the-scenes tales of Nathan MacKinnon and said he’s an ornery SOB when Colorado loses. Adrian said he’s learned to steer clear of MacKinnon after losses. It was a fun chat.
  • Just hours after going on sale, the Regina Pats trading card series sold-out and RP and Moose Faced Off for UFZ Moose Jaw and The Mad Greek over the value of a Connor Bedard rookie card. Darren feels it’s not worth much right now while Rod said it’s priceless. RP also said his “heart sank” when he saw the card is already on EBay for $100 US which proves it doesn’t mean much to the owner.
