Wednesday’s show was Episode #66 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes got the show rolling with The Warmup in which they covered the day’s biggest sports topics. That included the Cowboys signing Zeke Elliott, the future of NFL centre Brett Jones of Weyburn, and more on the Labour Day Classic rematches.
  • Rod had the scoop on Brett Jones, saying the former Regina Ram and Calgary Stampeder was caught up in the “numbers game” with the Minnesota Vikings and will spend the waiver period in Regina but is expected to sign with another NFL team.
  • The highlight of Hour 1 was a visit with former Argos/Ticats/Riders REC/KR Chad Owens from his home in Toronto. CO2 said he’s in shape and would welcome a return to the CFL however he’s comfortable with life after football and is launching a venture in 2012 with former Argos teammate Ricky Foley. Viewer Robin from P.A. asked Owens if he’d sign in the XFL and he answered “Not unless they offered a boatload of money!”
  • The extended interview hit on a hot topic in sports. Chad mentioned that fans, particularly CFL fans in Toronto, should get out and support their teams. “Records shouldn’t matter,” he stated. That spawned a discussion for the rest of the program where Rod disagreed, saying it’s not the fans’ obligation to buy tickets. He feels the teams need to give fans a reason to come to games, and that includes the entertainment factor surrounding the game.
  • Social media star Amanda Ruller joined the bunker for Hour 2 and discussed her role in the All Star/Celebrity Football Weekend in Regina, and covering the LDC for Access’s In The Huddle. She also talked about her time with the Los Angeles Temptations of the Legends Football League, and how that league is built on entertainment.
  • Stampeders blogger Ryan Ballantine joined the show via video chat from Calgary to troll Rider fans and recap the Stamps LDC win over Edmonton. He envisions a sweep by Calgary of the back-to-back set.
  • News broke near the end of the show that Connor McDavid might not be back in time from his knee injury for the start of the NHL season and Rod and Derek “Duke” Meyers – both Oilers fans – said the Oilers can survive on the short term without McDavid, but not for the long term.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Does the signing of Zeke Elliott make the Cowboys Super Bowl contenders? The vast majority of respondents say “no”.
  • In honour of show #66, the guys recognized sports stars who wore that number and it was led off by Mario Lemieux. Also discussed were Rider greats Chris Best, Dariusz Bladek, Tim Roth, Mike Anderson and Mike Samples as well as NFL hero Conrad Dobler.
  • The guys also talked about the 2nd Rod Pedersen Show Watch Party at 2:00 pm at Baller’s Rec Room this Sunday for Week 1 of the NFL season.
