WEDNESDAY SHOW RECAP: A ROUGHRIDERS THEMED SHOW!

Wednesday’s Episode #185 of The Rod Pedersen Show had a distinct Green & White flair to it! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Tuesday’s big junior hockey games, 2) NHL salary cap going up as much as $6M next season, 3) Tuesday in the NHL – Oilers and Golden Knights won, Leafs lost, 4) Sask’s Matt Dunstone is 5-1 at the Brier, 5) The CFL’s T.J. Jones situation, and 6) More on holding the CFL’s flagship franchise distinction.
  • Rider Hall of Famer Wes Cates joined the bunker in Segment 2 and gave an American player’s view on the T.J. Jones situation, and how Americans view the CFL ratio (“I learned about it when Jon Cornish didn’t lift a finger in the 2006 Stampeders training camp, knowing he’d already made the team,” Wes said). The Riders’ second all-time leading rusher brushed on Andrew Harris’s PED legacy and the outlook for the 2020 Riders.
  • Cates was asked his Mount Rushmore of football running backs and he listed Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders.
  • “New” Rider LB Otha Foster joined the show via video chat from Louisiana and talked about coming back to the Green & White in 2020. He said he said he’s coming in with the expectation that he’ll be the team’s starting SAM linebacker, replacing Derrick Moncrief. Foster talked about the pressure on the 2020 Riders with Saskatchewan hosting the Grey Cup, and compared D.C. Jason Shivers’ defensive schemes to his mentor Chris Jones.
  • Canadian Football Hall of Famer Jim Hopson was next up in the bunker and brought a wealth of knowledge. He’s a fan of CFL 2.0, saying Randy Ambrosie is trying to make the league international, matching the complexions of major CFL market demographics in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Jim talked about the pressure on the 2020 Riders compared to 2013 (he figures it’s about the same), and said his biggest rivalry among CFL Presidents was with Lyle Bauer, who served those roles in Calgary and Winnipeg. “Hoppy” also talked about his support of Saskatchewan players playing for the Roughriders, citing Dan Clark and Brendon Labatte specifically.
  • OL Josiah St. John is another player returning to Saskatchewan via free agency and joined the show from his home in Toronto. He said he’s “grown up” since being the #1 overall pick by Saskatchewan in 2016, and discussed his subsequent stints in Toronto, BC and Edmonton. He said he’s much more serious about his physical conditioning and the mental side of the game now.
  • Rod broke the news during the show that former Rider DL coach Mike Scheper has been named the Defensive Coordinator with the NCAA’s Minot State Beavers.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: How many wins will the Riders have in 2020? – 14+, 13, 10-12 or 9 or less? The majority of respondents voted for 10-12.
