WEDNESDAY SHOW RECAP: ANTHONY CALVILLO JOINS!
April opened with Episode 205 of The Rod Pedersen Show with more big name sports guests! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened the show with the report from TSN Ottawa’s Shawn Simpson that the NHL is discussing Saskatoon as a potential Quarantine City, similar to Las Vegas for the NBA. The guys discussed the possibilities, how it could look, and would Saskatoon even support the idea?
- The Rollout for Flooring Superstore came next with these Magnificent Seven show topics: 1) The guys’ all-time top April Fools jokes, 2) Depression in society is setting in amid the pandemic, 3) Arash Madani’s report that the Roughriders aren’t cutting jobs at the moment, 4) Commissioner Ambrosie saying he’s not considering that there won’t be a CFL season in 2020, 5) If the CFL season was shortened to 9-games, which teams would that favour?, 6) Mavericks owner Mark Cuban saying he supports the Bubble Cities concept in the NBA, and 7) The guys have concluded the Tiger King series, and gave their thoughts on the Netflix series that’s all-the-rage.
- Former CFL Coach of the Year, Grey Cup champion and former CFL Director of Officiating Tom Higgins joined the show from Calgary. He discussed how the pandemic has affected the football academy he runs, how his perspective on football changed with his officiating role, and how signing Henry Burris with the Stampeders in 2005 immediately changed the fortunes of that franchise. Higgins referred to himself as an “eternal optimist”, and he remains hopeful the CFL season isn’t in jeopardy. He feels that, at worst, the season will be shortened to nine games but admitted he doesn’t know any more than anyone else right now. Tom said they were just scratching the surface on his football stories, and offered to come back on the show in the near future to tell more.
- Leader Post columnist Rob Vanstone joined the show from his Regina home and gave his thoughts on all the latest sports topics. He feels a shortened season would favour the Roughriders, but also said the combination of Mike Reilly and Rick Campbell in BC would make any team a contender, at any time. Regarding Connor Bedard and the Pats, he said happy times are here again for the Queen City Kids. Regarding Saskatoon being a Quarantine City for the NHL, R.V. feels the Bridge City may not be interested in opening its doors to the NHL from a safety aspect.
- The highlight guest was 3-time Grey Cup champion Anthony Calvillo, who joined the show from his home in Montreal. He’s currently the offensive coordinator for the University of Montreal Carrabins, and said they’re all awaiting their next move with regards to the virus. A.C. talked about all the appearances he’s made in Saskatchewan since he retired, and how Rider fans have been great to him because they’re so respectful of the game. Calvillo told some colourful stories of his days with the Las Vegas Posse, and said the defensive back who gave him the most fits in his career was Hamilton’s Less Browne.
