WEDNESDAY SHOW RECAP
Wednesday was Episode #28 of The Rod Pedersen Show and it was a doozy! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes were joined in the bunker by former Winnipeg Blue Bombers, UofR Rams and Sheldon Spartans WR Addison Richards. “Addy Gold” has announced his retirement from the CFL and is doing a little coaching, a little broadcasting, and finishing his degree at the UofR all-the-while planning his next course in life.
- Addison offered his thoughts on just about every CFL team, but said the 1-3 BC Lions are the one best-posed to turn their season around. He feels they simply have too much talent to miss the playoffs. As for CFL 2.0, the 6’5″ behemoth said it’s a double-edged sword; he applauds expanding the league outside Canada’s borders but fears the “C” is being taken out of the CFL.
- Rod opened the Warmup by recanting his morning phone chat with former NFL and Argos WR Tori Gurley. The South Carolina product recently landed an ESPN Radio sideline gig and asked Rod for some tips on making a name in the business. How did he find RP? Gurley’s fiancé is from Regina and suggested he call Rod. What entailed was a hilarious story about Gurley trying out for Chris Jones’ Edmonton Eskimos in Florida back in 2015. Tori will be joining the RP Show as an NFL analyst in the fall.
- On the heels of the American League’s win over the National League in the 2019 MLB All Star Game Tuesday evening, the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre Poll question was: Who has the best All Star Game: MLB, NBA, NHL or NFL? At press time, the NHL was leading.
- TSN 690 Montreal’s Joey Alfieri joined the program via video conference and discussed the Alouettes’ 36-31 upset win over Hamilton in Week 4. Alfieri said Als back-up QB Vernon Adams Jr. is a very talented fill-in pivot while Antonio Pipkin is on the shelf, but doesn’t think he is franchise QB material.
- TSN 1150 Hamilton’s Marshall Ferguson – the Voice of the Ticats – joined the show on video chat from Tim Hortons Field and discussed what went wrong for the Tabbies in Montreal. Marshall said Hamilton got “blown off the ball”. Regarding the Simoni Lawrence appeal, Ferguson predicts the Ticats LB will be directed to serve the full 2-game suspension for his headshot on Zach Collaros in Week 1.
- 13-year NHL veteran Rich Sutter joined the show via video chat from his home in Lethbridge, AB. Sutter is a pro scout for the Columbus Blue Jackets and analyst for Sportsnet Flames broadcasts. He feels Artemi Panarin made a mistake in NOT re-signing with the Jackets, and said the skilled forward is getting bad advice from those around him. Sutter also said Alberta NHL fans can’t wait for the 2019-20 season after the swap of goalies Mike Smith and Cam Talbot between the Oilers and Flames.
- Jimmy Schimmel of Regina’s Hobo Donuts joined the bunker to drop off some of Regina’s freshest donuts and tempt the boys with a Donut Eating Contest at an upcoming Regina Rifles Tailgate Party. The crew was all over that idea, and the donuts.
- Vancouver soccer aficionado Simon Fudge was in the bunker to talk about the emergence of pro soccer across Canada and how Saskatchewan is likely next to get a team in the CPL. He predicts Saskatoon will be the landing spot. Simon, a Regina product and Luther grad, also discussed the challenges the BC Lions face marketing their product in the Lower Mainland.
- Thursday’s show will feature Kelly Remple, Mike Abou-Mechrek, Winnipeg’s Troy Westwood and more!
