CFL fans, after that marathon Saturday quadruple-header last week, the league is giving us a little breather.

Just three games make up Week 16 — but don’t let the smaller schedule fool you. There is plenty at stake, particularly in the East, where Toronto can clinch a playoff berth and a home playoff game with a win over Edmonton if Hamilton loses to Montreal.

So, with that in mind, let’s get to the picks!:

Montreal at Hamilton, Friday

Point spread: Montreal -5.5

Friday night football kicks off the weekend, and we’re expecting the Alouettes to bounce back from uncharacteristic loss at BC on Saturday (48-29).

Montreal got pounded, but let’s remember that this is a team sitting at 10-3 and one of the CFL’s elite clubs. The Als have also been spectacular offensively for most of the season.

And then there’s the receiving duo of Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead.

Philpot leads the CFL with 1,471 receiving yards, while Snead has 1,242. They’re also tied for the league lead with 11 touchdown receptions apiece.

That’s a frightening combination for any defense.

Hamilton is coming off its bye and desperately needs wins, but Montreal has the firepower to create problems all over the field. I’m expecting the Alouettes to put last week’s ugly performance behind them.

Edmonton at Toronto

Point spread: Edmonton -1.5

Yes, we know Toronto is at home. Yes, we know the Argos are fighting for their playoff lives. And yes, Chad Kelly is capable of taking over a football game.

But look at what Edmonton just did.

The Elks absolutely demolished Calgary 53-16 last Saturday, improving to 10-3 and clinching a playoff berth in the process.

Edmonton has become one of the CFL’s biggest stories down the stretch, and the Elks aren’t simply winning — they’re dominating.

Toronto, meanwhile, survived Ottawa 26-23 last week.

That makes this a fascinating matchup: Toronto’s urgency versus Edmonton’s momentum.

Ottawa at Calgary

Point spread: Calgary -8.5

The Redblacks are still looking for their first win of the season, and while they’ve been competitive at times, eventually you have to finish games.

Calgary certainly has its own problems after being embarrassed by Edmonton in back-to-back weeks.

But here’s the thing: we expect the Stampeders to be angry.

They’re fighting to stay alive in the Western playoff race, and this is precisely the kind of home game they need to win.

Calgary has more at stake, more offensive firepower and home-field advantage. Forget about the fact Jake Maier makes his return to McMahon Stadium.

Ottawa will make it interesting for a while, but not for 60 minutes.
