WEDNESDAY EYE-OPENER

The Vancouver Canucks beat Philadelphis 4-1 thanks to two goals from Alexandre Burrows. Before the game, the Canucks honoured former player, head coach, GM and team president Pat Quinn. The City of Vancouver also renamed a street outside Rogers Arena for Quinn, who died at 71 in November.

Elsewhere around the National Hockey League, Brian Elliott stopped all 25 shots he faced as St. Louis blanked Calgary 4-0. Blake Wheeler struck twice as Winnipeg toppled San Jose 5-2. P-K Subban scored the winner as Montreal edged Florida 3-2, and Mark Stone found the back of the net in overtime to lift Ottawa over Carolina 2-1.

J-J Redick scored 23 points, Chris Paul had 20 points and eight assists, and the Clippers beat Charlotte 99-92. The Clippers led 63-41 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter but the Hornets rallied within a point in the final frame. Blake Griffin had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Clippers.

Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard is out at Indian Wells. The Westmount, Quebec native had 74 unforced errors en route to a three-set loss to Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko. Ealier, Thonrhill, Ontario’s Milos Raonic beat Alexandr Dolgopolov, 7-6, 6-4.

Drew Hutchison allowed two runs and four hits in four innings of work as the Toronto Blue Jays doubled up the Yankees 4-2 in Grapefruit League action. Young Toronto pitchers Miguel Castro and Roberto Osuna  combined on five scoreless innings. The Jays host Tampa Bay this afternoon.

Derek Jeter is in Japan teaming up with former New York Yankee Hideki Matsui for a charity baseball game to support the survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in the country. Jeter will participate in the game at Tokyo Dome on Sunday with a group of student baseball players from the Tohoku region that was devastated by the disaster.
