Tuesday Commentary: Done Like Dinner

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: The race for first place in the CFL West is good and may turn out to be great. The Riders won at Edmonton 28-26 on Saturday to go to 5-2, while the Elks dropped to 6-2. Calgary may join this race before all is said and done.

More than anything – for me – the fact that 30,000-plus showed up for the game restoring the roar at Commonwealth Stadium is proof that there’s hope this league can be brought back to life. We’ve been assured that it was never at death’s door over the past few years, but the eye test was suspect. However it seems crowds are coming back. The games have always been great.

Next the great: The Moose Jaw Miller Express collected its franchise record 40th win Monday at Weyburn, when they split a doubleheader with the Beavers at Tom Laing Park.

(Did I ever tell you I saw the ghost of Tom Laing one late Friday night in the halls of CFSL Radio Weyburn in the summer of 1990? That’s a story for another time. My footprints are all over the southeast).

Anyway, the term “great” doesn’t begin to describe the season the Millers have had – both collectively and individually – but it won’t mean diddly squat if they don’t win it all. The WCBL Playoffs begin Friday. See you at Ross Wells Park.

And finally the ugly: The Blue Jays raised the white flag on the 2026 season by trading away franchise stalwarts Kevin Gausman, Daulton Varsho and Jeff Hoffman ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline. I’ve got friends doing the mathematics with ChatGPT on how the Jays could still claim a wildcard berth, even without these guys.

Pro tip: when you need to get out a calculator to find a way  to make the playoffs, you’re already done.
