WEDNESDAY SHOW RECAP: THE PAUL HENDERSON OF RIDER HISTORY!
Wednesday’s show was Episode #71 of The Rod Pedersen Show. Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes were joined in the bunker by Derek “Duke” Meyers for The Warmup. They touched on the day’s sports topics including the return of Jordan Williams-Lambert to the Riders, the Antonio Brown case, and Rod’s road trip to Gladmar, SK on Tuesday to speak to students on World Youth Suicide Prevention Day.
- Regarding the addition of J-Will, Rod felt the odd-man out should be WR Manny Arceneaux. Although viewers pointed out Arceneaux’s leadership abilities, Rod said Williams-Lambert is a great leader too and has more veteran status within that locker room. He was the 2018 CFL West Division Rookie of the Year before signing in the off-season with the Chicago Bears. He was cut last week.
- A real treat was a visit from 2007 Rider Grey Cup MVP James Johnson, who joined the show via video chat from his office in Atlanta, GA. “J.J.” talked about his role in that game in which he picked off Bomber QB Ryan Dinwiddie three times which sealed the win for Saskatchewan at Skydome. However following the 2008 season, Johnson was shipped off to Winnipeg via trade and it led to his rather quiet exit from the game. Johnson said, though, that he recalls fondly his time in Riderville and that it was Roy Shivers who brought him into Saskatchewan in 2006. Rod referred to James as the “Paul Henderson of Rider history” because of his Grey Cup heroics, however relatively brief time with the Green & White. Everyone agreed that Johnson should be considered for Plaza of Honour induction.
- CFL and CIS great – and Olympic bobsledder – Jessie Lumsden joined the show from his home in Calgary for a wide-ranging chat. It was a great interview where Lumsden offered his thoughts on the 2019 CFL season (he’s a big believer in the Blue Bombers), the Andrew Harris suspension and anti-doping in the IOC and CFL, and his thoughts on Canada West football where he is a TV analyst.
- On the anniversary of 9/11, the panel discussed where they were on that historic day in 2001 and how it changed the sports world, and the world in general.
- With the UofR Rams hosting the UofS Huskies in the Rams Homecoming Game this Friday, the guys talked about the match-up and what name should be given the provincial rivalry series. It’s a 1-game season series in 2019 and they offered the Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question of: Which name do you prefer for the series? The Wheat Bowl, Sasky Cup, Great Western Bowl or Louis Riel Cup? At press time, the Wheat Bowl was leading.
- In honour of show #71 the guys recognized sports figures who’ve worn #71 and the group includes Bobby Jurasin, Evgeni Malkin, Joe Poplawski, Gord Barwell, Leif Petterson, Wendel Clark and Nick and Rick Foligno.
