FRIDAY SHOW RECAP: RICK CAMPBELL JOINS!
Friday was Episode 136 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod, Dupes and John Frenzy opened the show with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores. They recapped a wild 24 hours in the CFL with the hirings of Scott Milanovich in Edmonton and Ryan Dinwiddie in Toronto. They also spent awhile discussing Thursday’s Jon Ryan interview on the RP Show and Frenzy said it’s a must to get the Regina product back with the Riders in 2020. Regarding the hiring of Dinwiddie, several CFL observers wonder if the 39-year old is ready but Rod’s take was, “If not now, when?” The guys also wondered if it’s a ploy to sign pending free agent QB Nick Arbuckle. Rod and Frenzy agreed that they feel for fired Toronto coach Corey Chamblin, who’s been saddled with some bad teams in his last two head coaching gigs.
- BC Lions offensive tackle Justin Renfrow joined the show from Vancouver. He’d been requesting to get on the show since the coaching abuse allegations in hockey surfaced a couple weeks ago. Justin told a disturbing story of an encounter with a coach while he was with the NCAA’s Virginia Cavaliers. The coach made a remark about “hanging” Renfrow and led Justin’s exit from the program. He admitted the incident haunted him for several years, even into his time in the NFL and CFL. Justin made it clear that he doesn’t want anyone to lose their job over the incident, but said he wanted to tell the story if it’ll help other young players who may be going through a similar situation. It was an incredibly powerful interview.
- The guys went further into Scott Milanovich’s hiring in Edmonton and Frenzy predicts former Rider offensive coordinator Stephen McAdoo will be added to the Eskimos staff. The pair won a Grey Cup together in Toronto in 2012.
- BC Lions head coach Rick Campbell joined the show via video conference to discuss him taking that job. He said it’s a very attractive opportunity, and he’s already had good visits with QB Mike Reilly. Regarding his time with the Ottawa RedBlacks, Rick said he looks back at the experience with “nothing but gratitude and positivity”.
- CFL/NFL Insider Tori Gurley joined the show from Toronto to offer his take on the latest goings-on in football. He said the Argos coup d’état is very puzzling. However he thinks the Milanovich hiring is a great match for the Eskimos. He feels Scott saw the writing on the wall with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and jumped at the chance to run his own show in the CFL. Tori also gave his take on the Dallas Cowboys drama and said he’ll be appearing in the RP Show bunker over Christmas as he’s in Regina to visit his fiancé’s family.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who will have the most success in their new stop: Scott Milanovich, Paul Lapolice, Rick Campbell or Ryan Dinwiddie? The majority of respondents voted in favour of Lapolice.
- The guys talked some Dub hockey and Dupes offered his assessment of the Saskatoon Blades who are hovering around .500 in a season where the franchise had high expectations. Darren will be broadcasting two Blades home games this weekend.
