FLAME TECH FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN

Fridays are reserved for the gridiron on The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – and we welcomed more greats this week! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The NY Rangers won’t release Alexis Lafreniere for Team Canada at the World Juniors, 2) Two WHL GMs have told Rod they expect/hope to play beginning January 8 and a third, Pats GM John Paddock, said the same on Thursday, 3) An NHL source tells Rod the league will play a 48-game season beginning on or around February 1 (Network NHL insiders are reporting a 58-game season beginning in mid-January), 4) What questions do you have for the CFL right now? (Dupes wants to know if they’ll play and Rod wants to know if there will be a business staff salary cap), 5) In our Instagram voting bracket for Edmonton’s football club team name, the Empire and Elk have advanced to Round 2, and 6) Week 13 NFL notes including Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon’s reinstatement, and the state of the Eagles.
  • Hall of Fame Roughriders broadcaster John Lynch reported that a source close to the Roughriders executive told him the league is looking to institute a $300,000 cap on QB salaries beginning in 2022. That became a big topic throughout the show. John Frenzy’s Friday appearances are presented by Wheaton Kia.
  • Longtime CFL and NFL coach Mike Kelly joined the show from Florida. Lynch asked him what his best memories are of coaching at Taylor Field and Kelly said it was the 1992 and 2009 Labour Day Classics when he came in with the Blue Bombers. He said there is no atmosphere like it in any leagues he’s coached. Regarding Lynch’s capped QB salaries report, Mike said it should be no higher than $250,000 and gave his reasons why. Kelly also dropped a bomb, saying no current CFL QB could’ve started in the 1993 or 1994 CFL (the era of Damon Allen, Matt Dunigan, Doug Flutie, Kent Austin, etc.) That touched off a wild debate from the viewers. Kelly also talked about the plight of his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, and how their fanbase is always after blood.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who will be the MVP of the NFL this season – Patrick Mahomes or The Field? Over 70% of respondents voted for Mahomes.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six, we were joined by NFL Insider Tori Gurley. He answered a variety of NFL questions and said Antonio Brown has been underwhelming in his time in Tampa Bay. He also said the relationship between Bucs coach Bruce Arians and Tom Brady has gone sour, and that Arians has thrown his QB under the bus. Last week Tori predicted the Detroit Lions would fire head coach Matt Patricia. 24 hours later, they did. Gurley also gave his weekly Tori’s Tips NFL fantasy advice, presented by Wheaton Kia and Fanduel.
  • The final two segments were devoted to the CFL QB salary cap and RP and Dupes Faced Off on the topic for Ultimate Fan Zone and The Mad Greek. Rod said this must happen to ensure the CFL’s survival while Darren said it’ll prevent top calibre quarterbacks from coming to Canada. Lynch agreed.
  • The MySask 411 Business of the Week is Hobo Donuts. The popular pop-up locally-owned start-up now has a store location in Downtown Regina on Smith Street. Rod said the company’s Founder & CEO Jimmy Schimmel has the trademark on “cool”.
