TUESDAY RUNDOWN: CHRIS JONES JOINS!

Things suddenly got hot in the CFL these days and we covered it all, with some hockey talk too, on Episode #408 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The search is on for Edmonton Football Team’s next head coach, 2) Argonauts sign controversial free agent WR Martavius Bryant, 3) Vancouver downed Ottawa 7-1 in Monday’s lone NHL game, 4) There are 13 NHL games Tuesday night! We are focussing on Oilers/Jets, Leafs/Flames, Blues/Golden Knights, 5) The Super Bowl 55 match-up, and 6) Monday we hosted a successful staff party at Landmark Cinemas. You may want to do the same! *We also recognized Wayne Gretzky’s 60th birthday and the 1-year anniversary of Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s death, plus the other passengers of the fateful helicopter crash.
  • Former CFL D-lineman Darin Burns (Ottawa, Hamilton & Montreal) joined the show from Hamilton where he is attempting a football comeback at age 56! Rod and Darin got to know each other at Touchdown Atlantic in Moncton in 2019, a city where Burns is an accomplished and successful entrepreneur. Burns told his story of a troubled childhood, suffering sexual abuse at a Toronto orphanage. Former Argo Bruce Smith was his mentor and has inspired him to attempt a comeback. At the very least, Darin expects to suit up in the Atlantic senior football league but he’s looking for a CFL tryout opportunity and is hoping it’s with the Argonauts. He gave a personal shoutout to Argos GM Pinball Clemons, asking for a camp invite! Viewers gushed about the interview and said how inspired they were by Darin’s story.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who should Edmonton hire as their next head coach – Jaime Elizondo, Chris Jones, Marc Trestman or Other? At press time, Elizondo was leading.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six, we were joined by Cleveland Browns Senior Defensive Assistant Coach Chris Jones from the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL. He repeated his interest in the Edmonton job, saying he’d like the opportunity to win another Grey Cup with the franchise. Jones said he’s unable to discuss his contract status with the Cleveland Browns, as per the team’s policy. Regarding his abruptly leaving the Eskimos a week after winning the 2015 Grey Cup, Jones said he left for a promotion and that anyone else would’ve done the same thing. Rod asked if he’d change anything from his three years with the Roughriders but Jones said it wouldn’t be much. Regarding the emergence of Cody Fajardo, Jones said the Rider QB “got his chance and proved me wrong.” Jones talked about Senior Bowl activities, analyzed the defenses in Super Bowl 55 and said he misses the CFL and Canada.
  • Rod and Dupes Faced Off for Ultimate Fan Zone and The Mad Greek Restaurant on who Edmonton should hire. Rod said it should be Chris Jones while Darren favoured Marc Trestman. RP noted that the favourite appears to be Jaime Elizondo.

Chris Jones should be hired for any CFL opening only if an organization is interested in winning. Do not kid yourselves that organizationa are. He makes the exact point as to how a free market, non bias, non systemic blah blah actually works. Chris Jones shows what upward mobility actually means. Nothing is given, risks are taken and any rewards belong to the individual. Telling that to people here is like speaking to a wall. They reply “but i am 15 years away from retirement” “i cant leave i get 5 weeks vacation”. By same token they whine how they… Read more »

riderville analysis,

all Cody Farjardo has proven so far is he knows how to hit a goalpost with a football throw in a must win pivotal playoff game. Here’s hoping he gets it right if the CFL ever plays again, hope.
