TUESDAY RUNDOWN: CFL FREE AGENCY & BLACK TUESDAY IN SPORTS RADIO!

Tuesday was bonkers on Episode #417 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • RP and Dupes cracked the lid with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) It’s CFL Free Agency Day!, 2) Should the free agency date be moved in order to avoid a clash with Super Bowl coverage?, 3) Monday NHL leftovers (the Oilers and Leafs win, and when does the axe swing with the Canucks?), 4) The Raptors beat the Grizzlies 128-113 and coach Nick Nurse gets kicked outta the game, 5) Gronk hits Disneyworld, and 6) What’s with NHL TV blackouts?
  • The CFL free agent market opened exactly when we went to air and the Riders came out swinging, signing the likes of Evan Johnson, Micah Johnson, the Herdman-Reed twins, Larry Dean and Godfrey Onyaka. The Alouettes were extremely active too, adding the likes of Almondo Sewell, Nick Usher and Natey Adjei. The Edmonton Football Team added James Wilder Junior. Coverage continued throughout the program.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which prairie CFL team will win free agency? At press time, the Riders were leading by a mile.
  • Famed NHL super pest Matthew Barnaby joined the show from Ottawa to recap Fight Night between the Sens & Oilers, the excitement of the Scotia North Division, and the benching of Patrik Laine in Columbus. Barnie figures that you have to respect the skilled guys’ abilities but they have to at least TRY to play defense. He’s partnered with Bet99 and offers betting tips in all sports at @MattBarnaby3636.
  • At the exact time as CFL free agency opened, Bell Media announced all-sports radio stations in Hamilton, Winnipeg and Vancouver are no more. It reportedly affects roughly 800 jobs. Sadly this news overshadowed CFL free agency, and Rod opined that Bell Media is supposed to be a partner of the CFL? Viewers chimed in from across the country.
  • In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and straddled it with all the breaking news. We were then joined by NHL great Brent Sopel from Chicago who gave a wide-ranging interview. The Vancouver Canucks alum said the Canucks players have quit on GM Jim Benning, rather that head coach Travis Green but it’s likely Green that’ll be fired. Regarding the struggling Chicago Blackhawks – where Sopel won a Stanley Cup in 2010 – Brent encouraged Hawks fans to be happy with their three Stanley Cups in six years and to be patient with the rebuild. He also implored the WHL to Return To Play using bubble cities in each division.
  • The discussion continued on the Bell/TSN cuts and viewers agreed that the RP Show is the way to go for live sports discussion across the country daily.
  • Tuesday’s show is available for viewing now on our Facebook page, you can catch the replay at 4:00 pm ET on Game+, listen to the podcast by clicking on the CONTENT tab at the top of this page, or listen anytime to our 24-hour live audio feed at RodPedersen.com/ListenLive.
  • See you at 11 am CT/12 pm ET on Wednesday on Game+ and YouTube/Facebook Live!

The biggest news today was the bloodbath @ Bell. What happens with the CFL TV contract? The Riders had a very good day. The 2 Johnsons address very big needs & one has to feel better about the OL & DL. I still think they need to make a depth signing on OL but they have their starters. The 2 Herdmans could start if Judge is out of the picture. Larry Dean is a very good signing & Onyeka is a good under the radar signing. He started a bunch of games @ CB with Edmonton in 2019 on a… Read more »
