WHEAT KINGS TOP PATS 3-2 IN OT
REGINA – A valiant comeback effort by the Regina Pats was foiled Saturday night, and the Brandon Wheat Kings rode off with a 3-2 OT victory in the Brandt Centre Hub. However the game didn’t end without controversy.
20-year old netminder Roddy Ross got the start in the Pats goal – looking for his first win of the season – and appeared more comfortable than his prior three starts, stopping 9/10 shots in the opening period. Brandon’s Lynden McCallum beat him at 13:05 of the first period and the Wheaties led 1-0 after 20.
They upped their lead to 2-0 in the second when Ben McCartney notched his third of the season shorthanded. However rookie Pats phenom Connor Bedard got the Pats on the board at 18:18 when he stole the puck at his own blueline and beat Ethan Kruger on a 120-foot breakaway. 2-1 Brandon after 40.
Veteran Pats rearguard Ryker Evans tied the game with a point shot on the powerplay at 6:58 of the third period and regulation time ended in a 2-2 draw.
Just 1:40 into the extra session, in a 3-on-3 scenario, Brandon forward Ridley Greig picked Pats defenceman Kyle Walker at the Wheat Kings’ line, springing Nolan Ritchie who rifled a backhand past Roddy Ross to end the game. The Pats vehemently argued the call, but to no avail.
Game over: Wheat Kings 3 Pats 2
Regina was outshot 35-24 while going 1/6 on the powerplay and killing 6/6 killing penalties. With the loss the Queen City Kids dropped to 1-2-2 while Brandon improved to 3-1-1.
The Pats return to action on Tuesday at 8:00 pm versus the Winnipeg Ice on AccessNow TV while Brandon’s next game is against Saskatoon on Monday.
