Monday Commentary: The Cookie

What a great sports weekend!
Depending on what side of the cookie you’re on, I suppose.
It was a full slate of games in the NFL, with no more bye weeks the rest of the way.
The highlight? It had to be the Buffalo-Detroit game, tabbed by many as a Super Bowl preview.
It was the highest-scoring game of the year, won by the Bills 48-42 in an upset, and I probably could’ve predicted that had I read the game notes beforehand. I read them after the fact, and learned these were the highest-scoring two teams in the NFL.
It’s also tickling that since we’ve boosted our NFL coverage on the RP Show (which has brought a 50% viewership increase year-over-year), it’s also brought forth a river of harmless trolls.
For instance, Buccaneers fans were rubbing it in our face that we picked the L.A. Chargers to beat Tampa in our weekly picks segment on Friday. The Bucs won in a rout 40-17.
At least they’re paying attention and following along.
Let’s not forget the NHL. You know what’s dominating social media upon opening my phone? The Buffalo Sabres losing 10 games in a row.
But I prefer the positive, and there’s lots of Connor Bedard coverage too. The greatest Regina Pat of all time scored the game-winner for Chicago in a 5-3 win over the Islanders. It’s his fifth career game-winner, tying Bobby Hull and Patrick Kane for most by a teen in Blackhawks history.
On Tuesday he’ll skate in his 100th career game. Where did the time go?
Of course I’m keeping an eye on the City of Regina-forgiving-the Riders’-Covid-rent story too. It’s a $1.3-million hit for the citizens of Regina and it’s fascinating to see the spin doctors at work.
Far more people are upset about this than I thought there would be.
But for a team trying to win back fans – and is ultra-sensitive about any bad press – this is a major P.R. nightmare.
I guess it’s not great times for all teams right now.
