They’re calling it the “Natural Disaster” Stanley Cup Final.
Have you heard this?
The Colorado Avalanche pulled off a miraculous upset in Game 5 of their second round NHL playoff series against Minnesota, and won the series 4-games-to-1 to move onto the Western Conference Final.
Meanwhile the Carolina Hurricanes have pulled off back-to-back sweeps to advance to the Eastern Conference Final and await the winner of the Montreal-Buffalo series. Pundits expect Colorado and Carolina to waltz through Round 3 setting up that Natural Disaster Stanley Cup Final:
An Avalanche versus the Hurricanes.
Get it?
To me, any combination of the remaining teams would be good but a Colorado-Carolina match-up would certainly feature the two best teams from the regular season, and that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
And not surprising either. My cohort Darren “Moose” Dupont has picked this as a Stanley Cup Final for each of the past five years and it looks like his lottery numbers are about to hit.
There’s a lesson in there somewhere.
Oh – and from the Junior Hockey world, the Everett Silvertips have assumed a 3-1 lead in the WHL Final and can close it out with a Game 5 win at PA on Friday.
And at the Centennial Cup in Summerside, PEI, the SJHL champion Flin Flon Bombers failed to make the playoffs despite winning two games in the round robin. They didn’t win the right two games.
The playoffs open Friday and they pit the Toronto Patriots versus the Canmore Eagles in one quarterfinal and the Summerside Capitals against the Truro Bearcats in the other. Waiting in the semifinals are Niverville and Longueuil.
Glad to be of assistance for ya on that …
