MONTREAL – Cornerback Kabion Ento scored the only touchdown of the game off an interception as the Montreal Alouettes beat the Calgary Stampeders 25-18 at Molson Stadium on Sunday.

The Alouettes emphasized the need to improve their pass rush coming out of a bye week – signing veteran defensive lineman and former Stampeder Shawn Lemon to help the cause – and backed it up.

Montreal’s defence limited Calgary quarterback Jake Maier to 256 yards on 24-of-44 passing and secured two interceptions. Maier, who was also sacked three times, was fortunate it wasn’t more as Montreal’s defence got its hands on a number of passes.

Under constant pressure early, Maier threw just nine yards in the first quarter before throwing an interception early in the second to Ento, who ran the ball 53 yards to the end zone in front of 18,093 fans at Molson Stadium.

Montreal (3-3) moved into second place in the East Division with the win, leapfrogging the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks.

Calgary slipped to 2-5 ahead of a difficult stretch in the CFL season. The Stampeders haven’t had a losing season since 2007.

MLB

Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning and the visiting Los Angeles Angels edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Sunday to prevent a three-game series sweep. Following the game the Jays announced they had acquired right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks from the St. Louis Cardinals, sending a couple of pitching prospects back the Cards’ way.

Adam Frazier hit a three-run homer as part of a seven-run first inning for Baltimore on Sunday, and the Orioles took two of three in the weekend series by pounding the New York Yankees 9-3. The win kept Baltimore 1-and-a-half games ahead of Tampa Bay atop the A-L East. The Yankees are 3-and-a-half games behind the last playoff spots in the American League after missing a chance to gain ground on Houston and Toronto.

MLS

A goal in the second minute by Jordy Caicedo was all Atlas F-C needed to beat Toronto F-C 1-0 in Leagues Cup play on Sunday. Toronto, which lost its Leagues Cup opener 5-0 to New York City F-C on July 26th, won’t advance out of Group N. Elsewhere, L-A Galaxy got a goal from Ricqui Puig (Rick-EE POOTCH) in the 16th minute, but the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps scored the equalizer in the 81st minute and then netted the winner by Brian White one minute into stoppage time to pull out a 2-1 win. The Caps will advance out of Group C.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

The Canadian women’s soccer team needs a win or a draw against co-host Australia in Melbourne on Monday to be assured of a spot in the knockout round at the Women’s World Cup. Canada could get through with a loss, but would need winless Ireland to knock off Nigeria, as well as some tiebreaker help in their group.

Jake Maier is the biggest mistake John Hufnagel made in the last ten years.

Jake Maier is not a mistake he is a young quarterback who has made a few mistakes but who has a bright future. Hufnagel made the right decision in trading Mitchell. Mitchell is the one who is washed up. We should thank our lucky stars that the Riders did not sign Mitchell as he has been a train wreck in Hamilton.

I agree Hufnagel made the right decision in trading BLM. But think back, the Stamps have replaced other QBs in the Hufnagel era and didn’t miss a beat. They did this year and last year too. I still say Maier hasn’t developed the way Huffer expected him to.
