FRIDAY SHOW RECAP: FOOTBALL FRIDAY!

Friday’s show was Episode #78 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • With Dupes gone to Calgary for Canada West TV coverage, Rod was joined in the bunker by RP Show Director of Scouting Craig Smith and Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch for The Warmup. They discussed the CFL’s Friday Night Football doubleheader with Calgary at Toronto followed by Hamilton at Edmonton. Smitty said “it’s going to be tough” for the Esks to knock off the Ticats without QB Trevor Harris. They also talked about the NFL’s Thursday Nighter between the Titans-Jaguars and more.
  • TSN’s Dustin Nielsen joined the show from Edmonton, where he’ll be calling the Esks-Ticats game. He talked about the absence of Trevor Harris, gave a wide analysis of the Canada West Football Conference, and chatted some Oilers. He agrees with Rod that Mike Smith should be the Oilers’ opening day goaltender.
  • TSN Calgary’s Jermain Franklin joined the show from Flames practice at Canada Olympic Park. He gave an outlook for the Flames in 2019-2020 and discussed how the Stampeders are a different team with Bo Levi Mitchell under centre. Rod asked Franky which he enjoys covering more: the Flames or Stampeders? He said the Flames get more reaction, but the Stamps are perhaps more fun to interview because football players are a lot more open with their answers.
  • Smith and Lynch hung in for Hour 2 and got into a deep discussion on personnel in the football business. Smitty explained the job of scouts, and how they don’t dabble in the “money” side of the game. They find players, and leave it to the GMs to deal with the salary structure.
  • Estevan Bruins GM/Head Coach Chris Lewgood joined the bunker later in Hour 2 and brought with him the Bruins’ new home and away jerseys for 2019-20. They’ve been the talk of hockey so far this fall, and even drew reaction from TSN’s Bob McKenzie. Chris also talked about the brand new SJHL season and offered his thoughts on the 25-game suspension to Yorkton’s Greg Mulhall. “I thought it was on the heavy-handed side,” Lewgood offered.
  • Producer Clark and Connor the Intern joined the bunker for the Overtime segment, discussing their favourite NHL teams, the Maple Leafs and Rangers respectively. Clark explained why he feels Auston Mathews will be named the Leafs captain and Connor discussed why the Rangers don’t have one.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre daily poll question was: What has you most jacked Friday night: CFL, Dub Opening Night, NHL Preseason or U-Sports/High School Football? The whopping winner was CFL.
  • In honour of show #78 the guys recognized sports figures who’ve worn number-78 in their careers. The group included former Riders Vernon Vaughn and Vince Goldsmith, the NFL’s Art Shell and Bruce Smith, and the NHL’s Pavol Demitra (Ottawa).
