Wednesday’s show was Episode #43 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • The show started out innocently enough. Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup, covering the day’s hottest sports topics. In honour of show #43, the boys talked about sports figures who’ve worn number-43 and the group includes Nazem Kadri, Richard Petty, Troy Palomalu and Dennis Eckersley.
  • The boys got a special treat when Prince Albert Raiders GM Curtis Hunt brought the WHL championship trophy, the Ed Chynoweth Cup, into the bunker. The Cup has been making the rounds in the 306 including a stop in Regina with Raiders forward Eric Pearce. Huntsy was asked if the panel could drink coffee out of the trophy. Curtis responded, “I wouldn’t”.
  • Then all hell broke loose with the news that the Saskatchewan Roughriders traded QB Zach Collaros to the Toronto Argonauts for a 4th round pick. In instant analysis, Rod said the Riders have rid themselves of a major distraction (the Collaros situation, not Zach himself), and that this move was win/win for the Green & White. Viewers asked how the trade will affect the play of Rider QB Cody Fajardo and Rod said that remains to be seen. Moves like this affect players in different ways.
  • RP Show NFL/CFL Insider Tori Gurley joined the show via video chat and said the acquisition of Collaros will not save the 0-6 Argonauts. He feels the Argos’ problems are far greater than just the QB position. Regarding CFL coaches currently on the hot seat – Ottawa’s Rick Campbell, Toronto’s Corey Chamblin and BC’s Devone Claybrooks – Gurley said it might be tough to find any coaches to takeover those programs if a firing was made. Tori also mentioned that he’ll be visiting Cleveland Browns training camp and will provide an update next week on the NFL’s “hottest ticket” team.
  • A special treat was the Voice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Marshall Ferguson, joining the bunker in advance of the Thursday Night Football clash between the Riders and Ticats at Mosaic Stadium. He feels his Ticats are undermanned at the moment with injuries at key positions and the suspension to LB Simoni Lawrence, but still figures it’s a winnable game. He’s also been extremely impressed by the progression of Cody Fajardo since he was pressed into service in Week 1 after the Collaros injury.
  • Sportsnet 650 Vancouver’s Andrew Walker joined the show via video chat. Regarding poor attendance for the 1-6 BC Lions, “Walks” feels Vancouver sports fans would support the team more if they were winning. He said that’s a fickle sports town. He’s also pleased with the early season performance of his favourite CFL team, the Roughriders.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in the CFL? The early leader is Hamilton/Saskatchewan, followed closely by Edmonton/Calgary.
  • Jeff Banow won the daily contest for Saskatchewan Rattlers tickets. The Rattlers are home Friday night to the Fraser Valley Bandits at SaskTel Centre in CEBL action.
