WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: AN XFL GUEST & LOADS OF HOCKEY, FOOTBALL TALK!

Hump Day included more fun sports chatter on Episode #454 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Bedard Mania. Connor Bedard registered 1-1-2 in the Pats’ 3-2 OT win over the Warriors on Tuesday and he now leads the WHL in scoring, 2) Tuesday NHL leftovers, 3) The NFL announces it plans to play regular season games in Canada, 4) CFL/XFL leftovers including more on a pending season, 5) The CFL Draft will be May 4, and 6) It’s the Leafs and Jets tonight in Winnipeg for first place in the Scotia North Division!
  • Seattle’s Reid Johnson of the XFL Markcast joined the show to talk about the XFL’s side of the CFL/XFL discussions. As an XFL fan/podcaster, he’s just happy that new life has been breathed into the league after it went into bankruptcy last year and was purchased by RedBird Capital. He pointed out this collaboration is more the idea of RedBird’s Dany Garcia than Dwayne Johnson. He feels a merger is coming and can’t get over the opposition to it from Canadian football fans. However he doesn’t feel an AFC/NFC, AL/NL scenario could work. He favours one rule book and doesn’t see any other way they could co-exist. It was a fun, informative visit and Reid answered several questions from viewers.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: What SHOULD have Connor McDavid received for his elbow on Montreal’s Kotkaniemi Tuesday night – 2 minutes, 5 minutes, a fine or suspension? At press time, voters favoured a suspension.
  • The Silver Fox Kelly Remple joined the bunker for parts of Hours 1 & 2 and discussed all these topics. They went deep with the viewers on the NFL playing regular season games in Canada and the history of NFL games in Canada in the past. They discussed the potential merger and Kelly also said he understands the position of CFL owners offering whopping paycuts to players. Remps then delved into Tuesday night’s Pats/Warriors game and said it was the best game in the Dub Hub this season and maybe in all of hockey. He marvelled at the battles in the years ahead between the Pats’ Connor Bedard and the Warriors’ Brayden Yager.
  • Sportsnet 650 Vancouver’s Joey Kenward joined the show to preview tonight’s Canucks/Flames game and discuss the struggles of both teams. He feels the Canucks wouldn’t be any better off if they’d kept Jacob Markstrom since he and Thatcher Demko are tied with 12 wins each. The former Swift Current Broncos broadcaster said a 2-win February is what’s killing the Canucks right now. Kenward also went into the hockey career of Connor Bedard and agreed with Rod that the Exceptional Player is somewhat of a mythical figure in BC hockey circles going back several years.

Reid Johnson is correct to not understand the vitriol directed at Dwayne Johnson and the XFL. I myself don’t even get it. Here is a fact. The CFL stadiums – new stadiums I might add were never full. The CFL just does not capture the young people’s interest. They can’t relate to it as it’s all NFL 24/7 and a lot of those kids frankly are hooked on Madden Football that’s what they equate the game too. The XFL with the hybrid of CFL/NFL rules played on an NFL regulation field will work. Most importantly it will work for the demographic… Read more »
