WHAT THE COACH SAID

The Roughriders returned home Sunday morning following their 29-25 loss in Calgary Saturday night.  The loss snapped the Riders’ three-game win streak and dropped their record to 11-6.  They’ll conclude the regular season at home to Edmonton next Saturday before hosting BC in the 2013 CFL West Division Semifinal.  The Stampeders improved to 14-3 with the win and clinched first-place.  Here’s the transcript of Rider coach Corey Chamblin’s session with the media:

WHAT CHANGED WITH THE RIDER OFFENSE?

CC: It’s week-to-week.  That’s a tough question, ‘what’s changed?’  We just have to do things better and that’s the whole team.  Like I said it was a close game against a very good opponent.  We just have to make sure that we find things that allow us to win on the road.

DID YOU EXPECT MORE OUT OF THE CORTEZ OFFENSE?

CC: I think the changes that were made throughout the whole team paid off to this point.  We’re a team with 11 wins who had the opportunity to have more and it’s about doing some of those little things a bit better.  It doesn’t matter who’s behind the helm of the offense or the defense, we have to learn how to win game.

ON THE LIMITED ROLE OF KORY SHEETS IN THIS GAME

CC: That’s one of those things where if you’re running the ball and you’re not effective when you’re running it, you don’t keep doing it.  We gotta be effective in whatever we do and that’s run or pass.

ON CALGARY DREW TATE’S SUCCESS AGAINST SASK

CC: It was a good change-up for them.  You got one game plan and you’ve got to be able to make some changes.  Biggest thing when Drew’s in the backfield, now you have two runners.  You have him and Cornish so it’s something we have to be able to scheme for.

ON RESTING PLAYERS IN GAME 18

CC:  That’s something we have to look at.  Of course we always want to win every game that we’re in and it doesn’t matter who we play, we have to be able to win those games.  We’ll look at the roster, check everyone out, and see how we’re gonna line up against these guys.

ON THE STATUS OF SB CHRIS GETZLAF

CC:  It was a knee injury.  I can’t tell you the extent of it right now.  I think he’ll miss some time.  I’m not sure how much.

ON DWIGHT ANDERSON’S POST-GAME COMMENTS

CC:  Dwight has some things to clean up.  We can’t make comments just because we’re frustrated.  That’s a sign right now that we’re not mentally tough enough in a couple of different areas to be able to win those games.  It’s not about being frustrated and talking about it, it’s about us doing our jobs 100% of the time.

ON SHEETS ARGUING WITH CORTEZ ON THE SIDELINES

CC: That’s definitely another sign of where we are.  The biggest thing for me is when a team’s down, we have to be mentally stronger.  We can’t break.  It doesn’t matter what the score is, if we’re not getting the ball, it doesn’t matter if they’re getting thrown on, we have to be mentally tougher.

I like the coaches comments about mental toughness.

Rest DD, and give Willy some extensive playing time.

CC has lost control of his players. From Sheets arrogant comment all week, then arguing with Cortez during the game. Durants bench penalty and then Anderson's post game comments. The players are not held accountable and are only worried about thethemselves, they have forgotten this is a team game. Sheets should be suspended for his actions for the last game. The self proclaimed best RB in the league needs to learn how to block, catch and keep his mouth shut.

If he doesn't bench Sheets he's lost the team.

This will all be forgotten in a few days. Riders will rest a couple of players and prepare for B.C. The way some of you jerks yap on here are not "TRUE RIDER FANS". Getzlaf will probably be gone for the season and the Riders will have to deal with that. Quit yapping about poor coaching, Durant's mistakes and the rest of your garbage talk. Remember they only lost by 4 points in Cow Town and that will be a different story in the final. Go Riders !

Four Points #1 Riders will have to prepare for 3 QB's if playing Calgary… It seems that the Calgary offence seems to run on all cylinders at all time… If one QB is not working, simply insert another. ————–#2 Although Sask is a better team than BC, Sask will have to do their best to not 'overlook' BC ————–#3 Sask should rest various players against Edmonton (maybe should also give Kory Sheets time to rest his mouth) ————#4 Cory Sheets is not bigger than the Sask Roughriders Team… He was more of a distraction than, dare I say it, Dwight… Read more »

Coach C has to pull the reigns in on this team, he has to show this group he is still the man in charge. if the leaders in the room are DD and DA then Chamblin has to get these guys heads straight for the playoffs. Personally I hope Mr.Reeds record stays in tact and out of respect for this organization Chamblin has the opportunity to make this right next week and show Sheets who the boss is, time to set an example of Mr. Sheets-after the disrespct shown to the organization in yesterdays game. By allowing him to take… Read more »

I imagine Dickenson wouldn't have let Cornish have the ball on the 3 yard line either. Ya right!! Sheets carried this club a good portion of the season and got them to where they had a chance at a home playoff game. One they won't win. Cortez could have called Sheets number and we would have likely had 7 points. That would have changed the game. Cortez disrespected a premier back who has been scoring for the team all season. Calgary would never have disrespected Cornish in that manner. Cortez's pass first in the red zone has resulted in abstract… Read more »

When I pay good $$$$ for tickets and merchandise I don't expect to pay for guys like Geroy and Sheets to be @#$%^&*! blockers!!!!! These guys are paid to make plays with the ball not @##$%#&&!!!! block while DD tries to throw to only 3 receivers. The coaches didn't make any attempt at adjustments when things where going south. Sheets and Geroy have every reason to be pissed off at the what their roles are right now. I will not be surprised when these guys contracts are ready to be renegotiated that they both tell the Riders to go @#$%… Read more »

Riders not the only team losing it on the sidelines this weekend. The Cowboys had a bit of a player blowup too on the sideline with some star players. That will be some major talk around the NFL on that.

Who was the biggest jerk on the sideline this weekend? Kory Sheets in the CFL or Dez Bryant in the NFL?

The frustration shown by our team is likely a bottle up of all the trials of the season. Our team has handled itself with class 99%of the time and I have no doubt they will come back stronger than ever. In my opinion Sheets trouble last night was a good thing because it forces him now to play for his team not himself. No more nattering about how good he is, no more disrespecting other players, he will just do his job, and he will explode when we need him to. We have seen the offence play well, but the… Read more »

I thought it was interesting when Lee Jones was interviewing Getz at the half and he said he was agreeing with Sheets while he was calming him down. To me that is quite telling as to the direction this offence has taken. I don't like it one bit. Here's another thought though. Perhaps it's better to get all the problems out in the open and sorted out at this juncture instead of in the middle of the playoff game where it's too late to turn back. These next couple of weeks need to be a thorough, truthful examination of where… Read more »

Let's be honest sheets is all for: sheets, the record, and a nfl tryout. Selfish and not a team player. Huffnagel showed whose in charge in calgary you don't perform have a seat, chamblin needs to learn that. Some fans suggest you pull durant he'll loose confidence I say bullshit if your boss sits you, you listen. Huffnagel has control of his team just like Wally used too. I think our team has become a country club again just like the Barrett era.

Kory Sheets and his disrespectful antics would never be tolerated by any head coach any league. This disrespectful sh*thead hopefully gets benched for team conduct unbecoming and not allowed the sacred team rushing record of a true professional and gentlemen on and off the field of play Mr. George Reed.
