THURSDAY SHOW RECAP: NHL DAY!

On what many are calling “Day 8 Without Sports”, we were back at it with Episode 196 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Magnificent Seven show topics: 1) What’s life like at the moment for everyone?, 2) ABC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Ashton’s recommendations on dealing with the pandemic, 3) NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appearing live on ESPN, 4) Adam Silver’s quote of “People need a diversion. They are at home and need to be entertained.”, 5) Could the CFL start its season with empty stadiums?, 6) How a return of pro sports could stimulate the economy, and 7) Potential playoff formats in the NHL and WHL, with the intention of “preserving the integrity” of the Stanley Cup.
  • On the Dr. Jennifer Ashton piece, Rod recapped her tips for dealing with the crisis including 1) Practice self-care, 2) Try to stick to your routine and 3) Don’t be afraid to inject some humour into your life.
  • Rod mentioned that Thursday at 7:00 pm MT on Facebook Live they’ll be airing The Recovery Hour with Mental Health & Substance Abuse counsellor Rand Teed along with other Health & Wellness experts. Rod said they’ll spend a significant amount of time on how to deal with stress & anxiety amid the pandemic.
  • Stanley Cup champion and NHL/WHL alum Brent Sopel joined the show from his home in Chicago for a wide-ranging chat. He said, “People in Canada don’t understand it. It’s crazy down here. We’ve got over 300-million more people”. Sopes also talked about always being a prairie boy at heart (he calls Saskatoon home), the current status of the NHL (“You’re out of game shape in two days”), the fall from grace of the Chicago Blackhawks, and he talked about his life as a Dyslexia sufferer and Addiction survivor, and serving as an advocate.
  • Sirius/XM NHL Radio’s Matthew Barnaby was next up, joining the show from his home in Ottawa. He said they’re considering putting his show on ice since there’s nothing to talk about with the NHL. Barnie explained his approach to self-isolation, a potential Stanley Cup Playoffs format, and his son’s career in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
  • Maple Leafs alum and TSN 1050 Toronto’s Carlo Colaiacovo joined the show from his home in Toronto discussing how they’re dealing with the crisis. He said they’re working from home studios, and he’s enjoying it. He said the NHL should scrap the remainder of the regular season, but is in favour of some sort of playoff format. Carlo also mentioned that he wasn’t high on the Leafs going into the season, and the team’s struggles aren’t a surprise to him.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Do you think the Stanley Cup will be awarded in 2020? The majority of respondents said no.
  • Near the end of the show, CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie released a statement on CFL.ca and Rod read it on air. He and Dupes applauded the Commissioner for being visible and providing a strong message to CFL fans and Canadians in general.
