TUESDAY RUNDOWN: CFL, FAN BASE & STANLEY CUP TALK!

It was an eye-popping edition of The RP Show on Episode #304 on Tuesday! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) RP woke up thinking about tonight’s Game 2 between the Golden Knights & Canucks, 2) The CFL Fan Base fundraising campaign, 3) More CFL players opt out, and Derrick Moncrief signs with the L.A. Rams, 4) A sad fizzle for the Colorado Avalanche in Round 2, 5) The Jays notched their biggest win of the season Monday at Tampa Bay, and 6) Forward Kyle Lowry is a question mark for the Raptors in Game 1 against the Celtics.
  • Regarding the CFL’s Grey Cup Fan Base promotion, RP said he’ll support it because he’s a CFL guy but expected more. He feels the CFL is capable of great things but have been surviving on “just doing enough” for far too long. The panel agreed that this campaign won’t be enough to save the CFL and anyone who thinks it is, is kidding themselves.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Will you pay $349 CDN plus tax to get your name on the Grey Cup Fan Base? At press time, over 90% of respondents said no.
  • Senators and Wheat Kings great Wade Redden joined the show from his home in Kelowna, BC. Regarding the Leafs’ blockbuster deal with Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Reddsie’s not sure if it’s what Toronto needs. He feels it’s hard to tell what’s going on in a locker room from the outside. Wade reported BC is alive with Canucks Fever but they took a punch to the gut in Game 1, losing 5-0 to Vegas. He expects a much better effort in tonight’s Game 2. He also talked about all the Brandon connections with the Golden Knights but he still gravitates to the Oilers since they were his team growing up.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by TSN 690 Montreal’s Moe Khan. He said CFL players are disillusioned by the way this has all played out, and the CFL has let them down. Regarding the cancellation of the season, Moe said it’s not as big of a disappointment in Montreal as it would be in Saskatchewan. Khan is the Voice of McGill Football and said he’s still not sure if they’ll play this season (it depends on who you talk to). He also feels the Raptors were in tough against Boston as it was and the potential loss of Kyle Lowry definitely won’t help.
  • Vegas Golden Knights insider Gary Lawless joined the show from Summerlin, NV to tee up tonight’s Game 2 but also chatted a little CFL. He feels the Lehner/Fleury controversy has been overblown and if anything, it’s brought the team closer together. Gary also defended the NHL’s expansion process for the Golden Knights and said it wouldn’t have been smart to tie the franchise’s hands right out of the gate. However Lawless saved the best for the CFL situation and blasted CFL owners by saying, “I’m enormously disappointed in the leadership of the CFL”. He feels the CFL might be best-served to go to a single-ownership model, for a variety of reasons. Layoffs were announced in the CFL head office Tuesday morning and Gary feels that’s another shot in the foot for the CFL. He feels with the league’s writers being let go, who’s going to cover the league in the months ahead because the mainstream media certainly isn’t?
  • Regarding a shift in CFL ownership, RP said people are starting to come around to his MLSE story. He feels he’s only been reporting the true behind-the-scenes-story for months even though people didn’t want to hear it.
