WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: JOHN LU, KRAKEN & TEACHABLE MOMENTS!

Wednesday’s Episode #502 of The RP Show was the type of show the program became known for two years ago! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with The Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Vegas Golden Knights down Colorado 3-2 in OT to go up 3-2 in the series, 2) The Lightning eliminate the Hurricanes, 3) Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is speechless regarding accusations of using substances to control his pitches, 4) CFL stuff. Where we at?, 5) The Jays got spanked by the White Sox, and 6) Toronto’s CN Tower is lit up in Montreal Canadiens colours.
  • ESPN 710 Seattle’s Andy Eide joined the show to talk all things Seattle hockey including plans for the Kraken’s Expansion Draft. Andy agreed it’s tough to predict since the protected lists haven’t been made available yet. However he said Seattle has always been a great hockey town, even if normal junior hockey fans are suffering from “sticker shock” regarding NHL ticket prices. Andy reported there’s tons of Kraken merchandise on the streets of Seattle even though jerseys haven’t been made available yet. He also discussed the Thunderbirds and former Seattle coach Steve Konowalchuk being named head coach of the Red Deer Rebels.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should the CN Tower be adorned in Canadiens colours? At press time 60% of respondents said yes.
  • In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for the Four Seasons Sports Palace we debated TSN’s report of a CFL Board of Governors vote on June 14 regarding the August 5 targeted kickoff date, and what it could mean. We also had plenty of discussion on the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
  • TSN Montreal’s John Lu joined the show to discuss the remarkable run of the Canadiens. He gave all sorts of reasons for the team’s stellar play, but left out head coach Dominique Ducharme who replaced Claude Julien mid-season. Rod mentioned that the Habs MUST remove the interim tag however John doesn’t expect it to happen before the season’s over. Regarding the CN Tower thing, John said he was surprised by noted it’s a classy gesture.
  • There was a landmark moment in the second segment when a viewer in Toronto chastised the show for reading a comment which poked fun at former Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong’s name. The viewer felt it was insensitive to the Asian community to which Rod agreed, and he immediately offered up an apology on behalf of himself and the show. The host said this is an incident where racism – even if it’s “well-intended racism” – needs to be erased from society. The viewer accepted the apology.
  • RP and Dupes Faced Off for Ultimate Fan Zone Moose Jaw and the Mad Greek Restaurant on the CN Tower controversy. Rod said he couldn’t accept it if a Saskatchewan building recognized a rival franchise while Darren disagreed, saying it’s good business!
