WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: LOADS OF CFL TALK & MORE STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
We kept the CFL train rolling on Episode #507 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – on Wednesday! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont got it going with the Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The officiating was abhorrent in Tampa Bay’s 4-2 win over the NY Islanders in Game 2, 3) Montreal visits Vegas in Game 2 of the other semifinal tonight (Rod predicts a 5-2 Vegas win), 3) The Blue Jays blow another save in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees, 4) CFL stuff including RedBlacks player Chris Larsen is no longer a suspect in a weekend assault in Toronto, 5) The WHL announces their 2021-22 season will begin October 1 with a full 68-game schedule and full arenas!, and 6) Soccer stuff.
- TSN’s Rod Black joined us from his Toronto home and was elated that the CFL is Returning To Play. The two “Rods” went over all the changes to CFL rosters and coaching staffs during the pandemic and agreed it’ll take some getting used to, but it’ll be fun! Blackie talked about what some of the marquee games will be on the schedule and gave an overall preview. He’s also intently watching the NBA Playoffs and the pair dissected the match-ups and favourites. Rod B. said that if Canadians are looking for a rooting interest, they should go with the Nets and head coach Steve Nash.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who should be the CFL On TSN’s #1 play-by-play voice – Rod Black, Rod Smith, Farhan Lalji or Gord Miller? At press time Gord Miller was leading by a large margin however there were several write-in ballots for Dustin Nielson.
- In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for the Four Seasons Sports Palace we were joined by CFL:360 host and NHL.com writer Darin Bauming from Winnipeg. Baumer said Winnipeggers are over-the-moon regarding the CFL’s announcement this week and said Bomber fans are more eager for Bomber news than ever before. He examined some of the storylines going into the season and predicted another strong showing for the Blue.
- Next up was Regina Leader Post Roughriders beat writer Murray McCormick who gave a Rider perspective. He feels there’s no reason why the Roughriders can’t repeat their first-place finish and said he’s eager to see if QB Cody Fajardo can follow up his West Division M.O.P. performance. Rod quipped that there will be no Sophomore Jinx for Fajardo since his second season as Saskatchewan’s starter was wiped out due to Covid. (Credit to Mike Lee for that one).
- The final two segments were devoted to Viewer Takeover and it included lots of back-and-forth with viewers on the CFL and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
- RP and Moose Faced Off on NHL officiating in the playoffs. Dupes feels we may not need referees in the future at all due to video cameras but Rod was quick to disagree. The Face Off is a presentation of UFZ Moose Jaw and The Mad Greek Restaurant.

Rod Black should be the CFL #1 broadcaster, he calls it like it is. For instance, a helmet is referred to as a Lid or a bucket, Rod has some football language onto his own and thats interestingly great.
