NEW YEARS EVE SHOW RUNDOWN: WORLD JUNIORS, CFL TALK AND A SURPRISE GUEST!

We had a blast on the last RP Show of 2020 – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – and Episode #387 had a lot of laughs and some old school RP Show stuff. Read on!

  • Rod and Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch kicked it off with The Warmup for the Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Wednesday at the World Juniors saw Russia beat Sweden 4-3 in OT, Germany down Switzerland 5-4 and Finland blank Slovakia 6-0, 2) New Years Eve clashes have Czechs/Austria, Canada/Finland and Sweden/USA, 3) Zdeno Chara’s days with the Boston Bruins are over, 4) The CFP semifinals are set for New Years Day with Notre Dame/Alabama in the Rose Bowl and Ohio State/Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, 5) Rod’s report of a wealthy private donor paying for a WHL season is getting legs, and 6) CFL signings. Regarding Rod’s rumour, he said he won’t divulge the anonymous donor for two reasons – 1) It may not happen and 2) Perhaps the donor doesn’t want to be identified.
  • We had some bonus points including RP’s New Years Eve CFL Power Rankings: West – Winnipeg, Sask, Calgary, Edmonton, BC and East – Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto. Plus more thoughts on Pat McAfee calling the CFL “dead” and “State Fair Football” on his show this week.
  • USA hockey writer Julie Robenhymer joined the show from New Jersey to recap Wednesday night’s games and preview the NYE match-ups. Rod noted that she really knows her stuff and asked what her background is in the game. Julie said she never played, but was “raised right” by her parents who are Philadelphia and Boston fans. Frenzy said he’s following the Flyers closely and asked for a prediction but Julie said she doesn’t expect much from Philly this season.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: What’s your New Years resolution – Lose Weight, Stop Drinking/Smoking, Start A New Hobby, or Other? At press time, Losing Weight was winning.
  • In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and were scheduled to be joined by World Juniors analyst Rich Sutter. However Sutter was pulled away by Columbus Blue Jackets business so Rod and Frenzy spent the first 45 minutes of the show discussing all things CFL, and debating with viewers.
  • Like the old days in the RP Show, we had celebrity viewers chime in and Producer Clark brought on Blue Jays great Gregg Zaun, who was watching the show live in Toronto. Zauny discussed the McAfee comments and said the CFL needs to become an AAA NFL affiliate where the NFL sends players, pays the salaries and uses the CFL as a development league. The World Series champ explained why he fell in love with the CFL in the first place, and then went deep into why a team in the Maritimes would be a huge success.
  • Dupes joined the show for the final OT segment and the guys unveiled DD’s Week 17 NFL best bets for betting partner Come On. The guys then put a wrapper on 2020 as far as the RP Show goes and said we’ve several big announcements regarding the show planned for early in 2021!
  • See you Monday at 10 am CT on Facebook Live and 12 pm ET on Game+ TV Network.
  • Happy New Year!
