Tracy Fleury is rolling at the Olympic Curling Trials

We are now officially on day six of the Tim Hortons Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, and the curling is better than ever.

Like any national tournament, fans are always in for a surprise or two, and these trials have been no exception.

Perhaps biggest of all however, has been the shocking performance from teams Matt Dunstone and Brendan Bottcher. Both teams are currently sitting at 1-5 and at the bottom of the men’s standings.

“It is shocking that Dunstone and Botcher are 1-5,” said CBC curling reporter Devin Heroux on Thursday’s The Rod Pedersen Show.

“In the last four years, Bottcher has played in four Brier finals. And he finally won it last year, but this guy has been as good as it gets.

“Dunstone the last two Briers, finished third and was basically a shot away in both of those of making it to the championship game. No one saw this coming,” said Heroux.

The poor performance is seeming to cause some frustration for the teams, and the teams might not be together much longer according to Heroux.

“I’ve been hearing a lot of things about teams breaking up after all this, and there are already negotiations going on behind the scenes about what teams are going to form after these Olympic trials,” said Heroux.

“There are times this week where I have looked at the skips and gone, they know something is about to change, and they don’t really like what’s happening on the ice, and this isn’t sitting well,” said Heroux. “Perhaps that’s weighing on the shoulders of Bottcher and Dunstone.”

On the women’s side of the trials, Team Tracy Fleury has quietly clinched a playoff spot and are undefeated at 6-0. Fleury has been the best curler on the ice this week and have knocked Jennifer Jones off the top spot in the women’s standings.

“Tracy Fleury just keeps on rolling,” said Heroux. “She is undefeated and just looking so good and she does it so quietly and so business-like.

“When you watch Tracy Fleury, you almost wonder if she has a pulse sometimes because she’s so cool and so poised.”

With no curling medals for Canada in the 2018 Olympic games, the entire nation is hoping for the right person to bring home the gold, and maybe Fleury is the one to do it.

“They are not flashy, they aren’t loud or flamboyant on the ice, and they don’t make a lot of headlines, but they just keep winning and I think that’s probably who you want to represent Canada,” said Heroux.

We will have all your curling updates heading into the playoffs this weekend on the Rod Pedersen Show.
